The mandate of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum is anchored in Executive Order No. 2 of November 2023, which outlines the following functions and responsibilities.

Expanding electricity access to rural and underserved communities across all 47 counties.

Energy Regulation, Security and Conservation

Ensuring reliable energy supply, regulatory compliance, and promotion of conservation practices.

Hydropower Development

Promoting and overseeing sustainable hydropower generation projects across Kenya's water resources.

Geothermal Exploration and Development

Leading geothermal resource assessment and power plant development in the Rift Valley.

Promotion of Renewable Energy

Accelerating adoption of solar, wind, biomass, and other renewable energy sources nationwide.

Petroleum Policy

Formulating policies for the sustainable development of Kenya's petroleum sector.

Strategic Petroleum Stock Management

Maintaining strategic reserves to ensure energy security and supply stability.

Management of Upstream Petroleum Products Marketing

Overseeing the marketing and distribution of upstream petroleum products.

Oil and Gas Exploration Policy Development
